Why have a table of a good many bets and their corresponding house advantage? The answer is easy, it will help you develop clearer and more intelligent betting choices. I've heard it said many times, 'in the short term, the vig has no bearing on craps wagering because anything can happen in the short term.' The House Edge on Craps Bets Crap games have some of the widest house edge spreads of any casino game. On the good end you have no house edge on the odds bets and just 1.41% on the Pass Line. On the bad end you have house edges over 10% such as on bets such like the Proposition 2 and 12. Here we list the house advantage for each of the lay bets: Laying against a 6 or 8 has a house advantage of 1.22 percent. Laying against a 5 or 9 has a house advantage of 0.90 percent. Laying against a 4 or 10 has a house advantage of 0.61 percent.
One argument that comes up a lot is how to quantify the house edge in craps. Normally the house edge is defined as the ratio of expected loss to the initial bet. However, how do you treat bets, like the place bet for example, when many rolls may be required to resolve the bet and the player can take it down anytime? Is it a push or should we assume the bet will stay on the table until resolved?
Personally, I prefer to define the house edge in craps on a 'per bet resolved' basis. However, for those who disagree, I present this page, which defines the house edge all three ways.
Multi-Roll Bets
The following table shows the house edge of all the bets in craps which may take multiple rolls to resolve. The house edge is shown three ways: per bet made, per bet resolved, and per roll.

Let me add two more things, based on frequent reader comments:
- Some of these bets may not exist anywhere on earth. For example, I've never seen a casino with buy bets on a 5, 6, 8, and 9 where the commission was payable on a win only. Nevertheless, I don't know the rules of every craps table on earth. I also know that if I omit such bets, somebody will write in and take me to task for the omission.
- The table above assumes wins are calculated exactly. In other words, no rounding up or down. Let me make it perfectly clear that you can lower the house edge if the dealers will round a win up or a commission down. A common one is a 5% commission on a $25 bet is $1.25. If the casino rounds that down to $1, then that cuts the commission to 4%. Finding other situations is an exercise left up to the reader.

- If the field bet pays 2 to 1 on both the 2 and 12, then the house edge is 5.56%.
- If the field bet pays 2 to 1 on the 2 and 3 to 1 on the 12, then the house edge is 2.78%.
- If the field bet pays 3 to 1 on the 2 and 2 to 1 on the 12, then the house edge is 2.78%.
- If the field bet pays 3 to 1 on both the 2 and 12, then the house edge is 0.00%.

The game of craps has a reputation for offering some of the best odds of all casino games. Unless you play perfect Basic Strategy at blackjack or perhaps count cards, you can't beat the Pass Line (or Don't Pass Line) with odds for a friendly bet at the casino.
In fact, when a casino offers 3-4-5 odds on line bets, the overall house edge falls below one-half of one percent! That's a very tiny amount, and one that can keep you happily playing craps for hours at your favorite casino, unless you veer off-track and place bets all over the layout.
The genius of craps is that waiting for a decision on a Pass or Don't Pass bet can take a long time. A good hand at craps might be 15 or 20 rolls, and players get anxious and antsy. Then they make proposition bets that tank their good odds and send their bankrolls screaming into the night!
Some players turn to crazy craps systems to stem the flow of chips away from their pockets thinking that something like the Colonel's Craps system will help, but systems just reroute the wagers. They can be successful and fun, but the house still has the edge. The only way to beat the game of craps for any period of time is to stay will low house-edge bets and catch a lucky shooter or a hot game and press your wagers while good luck is on your side.
If you were introduced to a new table game called Any 7 where you knew the house edge was 16.7-percent, would you play it? There are six ways to roll a 7 and 30 ways to roll something else. It's a one-roll wager. You'll win once in 6 rolls and get paid 4-to-1 odds. Wanna play?
Probably not! However, players make the Any 7 bet all the time during a craps game. They also bet on long-shot wagers like boxcars (12) and snake eyes (2), where the house takes an average of nearly 14-percent. Sure, an occasional Hardway bet is fun, but it's going to drain your bankroll fast. Take a look below at the edge the house has on the wagers available at a craps game.
